Soldiers, Airmen,
Marines and Sailors all understand that change and transition
are constant in the military. It's something that comes with the
territory of serving one's country. Normal as it may be however,
each time a service member is relocated, sent to war, assigned
unfamiliar duties, promoted in rank, and returns from war a
significant emotional event occurs. The effects of this change
and transition are felt in every unit, company, family and
workplace with military personnel. These effects can and do
disrupt all areas of life. That's normal.
Even "war hardened"
veterans need the space to express and work through the disruptions that change
and transition create. As easy as our troops and their families sometimes make
it appear, these kinds of biblical scale changes make navigating a balanced life
an extreme challenge. Traditional talk therapy has its place in this process,
as does career and life coaching.
What would it be
like to combine these approaches with experiential learning involving one or
more 1,200+ lbs
of living, breathing and feeling horses?
Inward Bound Equine
Assisted Learning Center has done just that in a program called Life Nav™. In
this program horses are used to facilitate the learning of valuable life skills
while a licensed therapist and certified life coach observe the interactions.
The troops practice life skills with the horses who immediately provide
valuable feedback that serves as metaphors for family and work life behaviors.
During these
sessions service men and women allow their barriers to drop and creativity to
flow while problem solving individually and as a group. They share insights and
obstacles that appear to be in the way of achieving personal and professional
goals. Action plans are created by each individual that reflect reasonable,
actionable and measurable goals with steps included on how to reach each goal.
It is important to celebrate every success no matter how small it may appear.
This practice makes navigating life an encouraging adventure!
